21 February – 15 March, 2009 | Thavibu Gallery | The Silom Galleria | 3rd Floor, Suite 308, 919/1 Silom Road | Open: Tuesday – Saturday: 11:00 – 19:00 Sunday: 12:00 – 18:00

Thavibu Gallery is pleased to present the art exhibition Speaking Alone – a multi-media and pioneering art exhibition of Burmese conceptual art.

As the title of the exhibition indicates, the art exhibition of works by four well known Burmese artists deal with isolation which the country and its people have endured for decades. This exhibition brings together Aung Myint – the pioneer of Burmese conceptual art, Phyu Mon – one of Burma’s few female artists, and two of Burma’s most well known conceptual and performance artists Nyein Chan Su and Aye Ko. The works featured include photographs, mixed media paintings, video installations, three dimensional installations and performances. This exhibition gives us a rare glimpse into a proud, but isolated country.

The exhibition is curated by the international curator Shireen Naziree.

Aung Myint is 62 years old and Burma’s pioneer on conceptual art, installations and performance art. He is also a painter, and a winner of the ASEAN Art Awards. He has participated in numerous exhibitions around the world, and his works are found in museum collections such as the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan.

Phyu Mon is 48 years old and a rare breed – a Burmese female artist focusing on mixed media pieces and performance art. She is well known for her photo manipulations.

Aye Ko is 45 years old and a prominent performance artist in Burma. He is also well known for installations and video works and has participated in several international events. He recently took part in the international Thermokline exhibition in Germany.

Nyein Chan Su is 35 years old and belongs to Burma’s generation of young and dynamic artists who look beyond the country’s borders for inspiration while at the same time have their roots firmly planted in Burmese culture. He is well known for his performance work, and he also produces video and mixed media works as well as paintings.
