Bottled Water: Putting thoughts on H2O

Demand for water continuously increases as the world population expands. Naturally, water has become increasingly commercialized and integrated into modern living. With the proliferation of environmental pollution, pure water has become a valuable commodity. Even water from the tops of glacial peaks in the North Pole has been bottled and marketed for its purity with an expensive price.

From public resource to coveted economic commodity, bottled water is now a billion-dollar business. In 2011, it is estimated that global bottled water sales will amount to 2.6 billion baht. In the US, where tap water is safe to drink, 85 millions bottles of water are consumed each day, assuring water industry investors’ fortunes, with little or no effect on countering forces such as struggles for water sources, wastefulness of resources, and generation of huge amounts of garbage in the form of plastic bottles.

In Thailand, collecting rainwater in large earthenware jars is fast becoming obsolete as bottled water consumption becomes the norm. Even though the government imposes price controls on bottled water in some areas, market competition has created a new sales channel: bottled mineral water, targeting health-conscious consumers with buying power and within the next five years, the mineral water market is expected to double its current worth.

The mini exhibition “Bottled Water: Putting thoughts on H2O” illustrates the story of drinking water, one of the four essential elements to human kinds, in this creative economy era. With increasingly sophisticated consumers, products and services need to be more creative to satisfy the increasingly complex demand. At the same time, looking ahead to potential issues and consequences in the design and production of products is also imperative, as well as the consideration in social responsibility and sustainable consumption.
