Ausstellung anders als immerZeitgenössisches Design und die Macht des Gewohnten27 Februar – 13 März 2012 @Crystal Design CenterEröffnungsfeier am 27. Februar 2012 um 18 Uhr Zusammenarbeit mit Crystal Design Center und Bangkok University Gallery (BUG) In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kurator Volker Albus präsentiert das Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e. V. (ifa/Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations) mit der Ausstellung anders als immer. Zeitgenössisches Design und die Macht des Gewohnten ausgewählte Beispiele dieses Designphänomens. Mit 106 unterschiedlichen Arbeiten und insgesamt 148 Objekten von 47 in Deutschland und 20 im europäischen Ausland arbeitenden Designern und Designergruppen wird die Vielfalt der von der Konvention abweichenden Entwürfe gezeigt und anhand von Funktion, Materialität, Konstruktion und inhaltlichen Bezügen diskutiert. Das Regal, der Orientteppich, der Sessel: Die gattungsspezifische Bezeichnung setzt Assoziationen frei in Bezug auf Konstruktives, Dekoratives und Konfiguratives - und bedeutet zugleich Festlegung. Daher werden genau diese konventionalisierten Gestaltungsgrundlagen von Designerinnen und Designern bewusst unterlaufen und auf frappierende Art ad absurdum geführt. Die Arbeiten fordern auch dazu auf, über Erwartungen, Verhaltenscodes und das Bezugsfeld fest gefügter Vorstellungen nachzudenken und die tradierten Festlegungen zu überprüfen. Diese „Brüche mit der Macht des Gewohnten“ belegen die tief gehenden soziokulturellen Veränderungen, die wir zurzeit auf allen Gebieten unseres Alltags erfahren und die sich in Stichworten wie Mobilität, Migration, Fastfood und vielen mehr finden. THE GOETHE-INSTITUT THAILAND and THE INSTITUTE FOR FOREIGN CULTURAL RELATIONS (ifa) present AN EXHIBITION BY PROF. VOLKER ALBUS IN COOPERATION CRYSTAL DESIGN CENTER WITH BANGKOK UNIVERSITY GALLERY(BUG) The Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e.V. (ifa) and curator Volker Albus have prepared the exhibition somewhat different. Contemporary Design and the Power of Convention which shows selected examples of this design phenomenon. The bookshelf, the Persian rug, the easy chair: these generic terms alone trigger
associations relating to the structural, decorative and configurative aspects of the objects.
In "somewhat different" the designers deliberately subvert their general, conventional understanding to reveal the absurdity of these associations. The designs do not only provoke astonishment, but challenge one to reflect on general expectations, codes of behavior as well
as the referential context of firmly established notions, and to review traditional fixations.

On the basis of 106 different items and a total of 148 objects by 67 individual designers and studios, 47 of them based in Germany and 20 in other European countries,
the exhibition discusses the objects in terms of function, materials, construction and content references. On February 27th , 2012 is the opening day of the exhibition at Crystal Design Center at 6 PM.
