EROS [VS] MACHINISM
(Architectures Storytelling)
François Roche / Stephanie Lavaux: R&Sie(n)
The Reading Room

The Advanced Studio, Columbia University - Gsapp (New York)

EROS [VS] MACHINISM
(Architectures Storytelling)
Fran?ois Roche / Stephanie Lavaux: R&Sie(n)
Monday, April 18th, 6:30pm
The Reading Room, Silom 19

The Reading Room presents Eros [VS] Machinism, an informal lecture, or architectures storytelling, by Fran?ois Roche and Stephanie Lavaux, from the French architecture group R&Sie(n).

This group works simultaneously through the architectural practice R&Sie(n) and the “new-territories” research organization. It also leads architectural research such as the Advanced Studio at Columbia University - Gsapp (New York). Their projects have been exhibited at the Columbia University, UCLA, ICA London, Mori Art Museum, Pompidou Center, Musee d'Art Moderne, MIT's Media Lab, Tate Modern, and Orl?ans/ArchiLab International Architectural Conference. R&Sie(n) were among the architects selected by France for the 1990, 1996, 2000 and 2002 (refused) Venice Architectural Biennale, and were also featured in the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2010 in international selection.

Their projects in Thailand include "Hybrid Muscle," a collaboration with Phiippe Parreno at The Land Foundation (2002) (http://www.new-territories.com/hybridder2.htm); and an unrealized Contemporary Art project, "Dusty Relief" (http://www.new-territories.com/roche2002bis.htm).

Their works are organized on three sets of themes :Practice as Lifespan: Here and Now: An architecture which expresses the action to produce in real-time, and that this moment indicates the fragile moment which negotiates with the arrow of time, with the transitory one or what seems the being in order to give an account of the strategies of interventions like the negotiation with the constraints and the economies.

Fiction as Practice: Here and tomorrow (fiction / from Latin fictio as “a making to form, mold, shape...”): An architecture which expresses the action to produce in differed and altered time. Simultaneously operative and fictional, it tries to re-scenarize the relation with a situation, an environment, an industrial innovation like a capable fiction to become a vector of reality, a principle of capable expertise of transforming this same reality.

Research as Speculation: Elsewhere and simultaneously (speculation): An architecture which expresses the action to produce in a speculative time, and which works out devices between robotics, mathematics, neurobiology and biochemistry, in order to take the risk of a critical, political and esthetic emission. The investigation of the new technological tools opens lines of thoughts which nourish the imaginary ones.

About R&Sie(n): Fran?ois Roche : Born February 25, 1961 in Paris / State licensed architect (DPLG), 1987 architectural school graduate (U.P.A. no.3 at Versailles).St?phanie Lavaux: Born June 11, 1966 in Saint-Denis, La R?union / Left the Paris fine arts school in 1990.Toshikatsi Kiuchi: Born in Japan September 5, 1978. / Masters degree in architecture 2004, graduate of the university of Tokyo.
