"A PERSONAL GOD"
by Piyanat Makkrajang
Opening Reception: July 7, 2011 at 6 - 8 pm.
Exhibition: July 8 – Aug 7, 2011
Imagining the absolute, we rely on bits and pieces of everyday experience. Dreaming of a perfect bliss, we revisit the moments of human warmth and spontaneous beauty allowed by our imperfect earthly existence. Thinking of utopian societies, we consider the touches of friendship or familial harmony that have shaped and directed our proper lives.
Piyanat Makkrajang's first solo exhibition centers on the image of his grandmother, a woman holding special significance for his life.
Using digital collage techniques, the artist frames snapshots of the charming Thai old lady with backdrops and lighting characteristic of religious iconography, while her surroundings remain undeniably low-key: pets, food items, kitchen utensils, gardening implements and so on. By this appeal to childish affection funneled through color-saturated mass-media sensibilities, Mr. Makkrajang
attains what he is aiming at: a slightly ironic homage to a strictly personal god.
