28 March 2018 : Documentary night #8 presents “Waste Land” (2010)

What happens when a Brazilian artist goes back to his home because he wants to change people's lives using garbage?

This documentary film, Waste Land directed by Lucy Walker is about Vik Muniz, a Brazilian artist and photographer who transfers unlikely materials into art. He goes on a journey from his home in Brooklyn to his native country Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, to explore its landfill sites. This film shows his methodology and behind the scenes before his solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM).

The film not only reflects the artist’s processes and techniques, but it also reflects the different aspects of diversity within different groups of people. When you watch this film, you may have to reconsider the idea of 'art' - is it just attractive? Exquisite? Crazy? Or does it include life and human values?

Follow the story of Vik Muniz's journey and the fateful workers together with us and find out how so-called junk can be reformed into outstanding art pieces.
