S.A.C. Residency Program under the management of S.A.C. Subhashok The Arts Centre is proud to present DEPRESSION CONTOUR, the exhibition showing creative works of four artists in the first cycle of S.A.C. Residency Program. Our Residency Program begins with an aim to welcome any artists from all around the world coming to live and work in our residence located in Chiang Mai. As Chiang Mai is the place where traditional and contemporary art & culture are blended smoothly, the artists in residence can create works of art effected by rich culture and art scene in the local area. We started the first cycle with four artists working in various forms and techniques, namely, Akira Ishiguro, an artist from Japan; Natalia Avdeeva, a London-based Russian painter; Montana Torrey, an artist from U.S.A.; Marco Melgrati, an artist from Italy.

During 3 months of residence, the four artists have learned and experienced culture and ways of living in the local area. Also, they have opportunities to talk and engage with local people, artists and several groups of creative practitioners in Chiang Mai. Artworks they have created serve as reflections from outsiders on the Thai local areas and especially the Chiang Mai locale. Whatever they have seen, felt and sensed will be expressed in their creative works. Research topics that were explored during the progress of the Residency Program had started with the curiosity upon people, cultures as well as local communities in Thailand. Our familiarity with the homeland has blinded us from some wonderful aspects for which foreign visitors have found them interesting. The visitors tend to be astonished by amazing ways of life which is caused by geographical features in Thailand.

DEPRESSION CONTOUR is an exhibition which result from many stories that had happened to the residency artists while they were living and working in the same residential area. The fluctuation of climate, geography as well as language and culture have had impacts on them. The challenge they had to face in this fluctuation caused them discovering new things for their creative practice. So, joining the Residency Program is much more than only opening their eyes; but also, opening their minds and perspectives, which made them ‘transform’ to be finer, eventually.

All the changes will reveal themselves through the works of art in the exhibition DEPRESSION CONTOUR which will be presented in our art spaces in Chiang Mai and Bangkok respectively.

the exhibition will be shown during 10-28 February 2018 at Subhashok The Arts Centre. The opening night will be on 10 February 2018, 6:00 PM.
