In a new series of oil paintings Justin Mills incorporates lines from a diverse selection of songs and poems using a manipulated alphabet that slows down the reading process allowing the eye and mind to linger longer.
The title of the series comes from ‘Maquiladora’ by Radiohead.

Grass is green at the edge of the bubble
Beautiful kids into beautiful trouble
Well it seems to fall out of the sky and come down on you
Oh baby, burn
Good times had by all
Just swallow your guilt and your conscience

‘Curated Memories’ by Cedric Arnold

These are foreign yet familiar scenes, witnessed both as an observer and an accomplice. This city invites fragmented ways of seeing, and here, it feels as if memory might have ceased to be desirable.

These images are not meant to be; the instant film negative is to be discarded to keep only the print, with the unstable part, more prone to damage and involuntary marks of time, leaving further room for chance to intervene. The images are often further subjected to chaotic darkroom experiments.

Perhaps as a refusal of memory, certainly a reflection of complex feelings about a sense of belonging, home, exile, even reality; the images present themselves as an odd, convenient, and at times rather comical opportunity to re-invent an exile’s story in this city, Bangkok.
