(Ancient Wall)

For the first time ever, this is the art exhibition displayed on the ancient wall of Chiang Mai Historical

Centre. “Devas Dharma” (Meeting place for Devas) is one of a kind exhibition by Pakaphong Thongkaing

in collaboration with the Klangwiang Chiang Mai Museum Partnerships, from 9th January – 31st March

2015.

Devas Dharma (The gathering place for Devas)

This exhibition “Devas Dharma” is spearheaded by Suwaree

Wongkongkaew who is one of the head of Klangwiang Chiang Mai

Museum Partnerships. He has a vision that Pakaphong’s work was a

perfect complement to be placed on the ancient wall projected by the

lights located on the dark spot of the historical digging area within

Chiang Mai Historical Centre.

Besed on the evidence , Phra Kaew Temple was located on the site , in the early Rattanakosin era.

The temple was built as a palace temple according to a belief of central Thai people. Later, when the

King’s palace was moved, the temple became less important and was abandoned. For this reason, the 2

ancient walls, surrounding Phra Kaew Temple, could have been a part of this old temple and now they

cover areas of both Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Centre and Chiang Mai Historical Centre.

Pakaphong Thongkaing is an artist who started his work with mural painting in more than 10

temples. Then created his style of Buddhism artwork and had three solo exhibitions. For this 4th time

exhibition, he felt like the same during the time he made the mural paintings for the temple and most of

all, this exhibition is honored by National Artist Phichai Niran, to preside at the opening ceremony.
