คุณเล็ก วิริยะพันธุ์ มีความคิดว่าภายในท้องช้างซึ่งจะจัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุนั้น ควรมี
ลักษณะเป็นสวรรค์และจักรวาล คุณพากเพียร บุตรชายคนโตผู้สานเจตนารมณ์ของบิดา
ได้ติดต่อนาย Jakob Schwarzkopf ศิลปินชาวเยอรมัน ผู้สร้างผลงานกระจกสีที่
เพดานอาคารทรงโดมพิพิธภัณฑ์ช้างเอราวัณ ให้ดำเนินการออกแบบวาดภาพจิตรกรรม
สีฝุ่นรูปสุริยจักรวาลภายในท้องช้างเอราวัณศิลปินผู้ออกแบบอาศัยความโค้งของท้องช้าง
โดยออกแบบภาพวาดเป็นรูปสุริยจักรวาลในลักษณะร่วมสมัย มีดวงดาวต่างๆในระบบ
สุริยจักรวาลเรียงรายอยู่ในท้องฟ้าจนสุดขอบจักรวาลภาพจิตรกรรมสีฝุ่นนี้เป็นการ
วาดภาพแบบโบราณของทางยุโรปเช่นเดียวกับการวาดภาพของไทย โดยเริ่มจากทำความ
สะอาดพื้นปูนที่จะวาดให้เรียบร้อย จากนั้นทาสีรองพื้นครั้งที่ 1 เมื่อแห้งจึงทาสีรองพื้น
ครั้งที่ 2 คุณสมบัติของสีรองพื้นนี้คือลบรอยร้าวของผนังปูน หลังจากนั้นจึงทาทับ
ด้วยสีรองพื้นจริง(สีขาว)เป็นครั้งที่ 3 แล้วปล่อยให้แห้งสนิท นำกระดาษไขมาปรุตาม
ลายเส้นของภาพจิตรกรรม แล้วทาบบนพื้นปูนที่จะวาด จึงใช้สีฝุ่นตบไปตามรอยปรุ
ของกระดาษไข ซึ่งจะได้โครงร่างของภาพเขียนก่อนที่จะลงสี จากนั้นจึงลงสีตามที่ออกแบบไว้ ภาพกลุ่มอุกกาบาตมีการวาดแตกต่างไปจากภาพอื่นๆคือการปิดทองคำเปลวที่ภาพซึ่ง
เป็นเทคนิคโบราณของเยอรมัน โดยเริ่มจากทาสีทองที่รูปอุกกาบาตแล้วใช้น้ำประสานทอง
ทาทิ้งไว้จนแห้งประมาณ 3 ชั่วโมง จากนั้นนำแผ่นทองคำเปลวมาปิดทับโดยใช้มือตบให้
แผ่นทองติดสนิทแล้วใช้แปรงปัดแผ่นทองเป็นเนื้อเดียวกันไม่ให้มีรอยต่อ เมื่อเสร็จสีทอง
จะขับเน้นกลุ่มอุกกาบาตให้ลอยเด่นขึ้นมาภาพจิตรกรรมสุริยจักรวาลเป็นภาพขอบฟ้าอัน
เวิ้งว้าง ประกอบด้วยดวงดาวต่างๆ ทางช้างเผือก กลุ่มอุกกาบาต ดาวหาง ซึ่งเป็น
สรรพสิ่งที่อยู่ร่วมกันในจักรวาล และเราก็คือสิ่งมีชีวิตเล็กๆในจักรวาลอันกว้างใหญ่ไพศาล

Solar System Painting

Khun Lek Viriyapant thought that inside the elephant’s belly, he can exhibit ancient objects. This place should be characterized as heaven and universe. Khun Pagpean, his eldest son, followed his father’s intention by inviting Mr.Jakob Schwarzkopf, German artist who decorated the stained glass in the dome’s ceiling of Erawan Museum. Also, he designed tempera painting of solar system inside the elephant’s belly.
He used the curve of elephant’s belly to design his solar system painting in contemporary style where there are many stars in the sky, in the entire universe.
The tempera painting is the ancient European style of painting which is the same as Thai painting. First, they cleaned the plaster surface, then they painted the foundation colour for one time, let it dry and paint it for the second time. The quality of this colour is to blot out the crack of the plaster surface. After that, they painted white colour for the third time and let it dry.
Stencil paper was used to perforate as the lines in the painting and put it over the plaster before pat the colour on. This is the way they sketched the picture before painting.
The painting of meteorites was different from other paintings because they gilded the painting with gold which was the ancient German style by beginning from painted gold colour on the meteorite pictures. They lay in the borax first and after 3 hours, they brought gold leaves to pat on it then brushed the gold in order to make them no trace. When finished, the golden lines will accentuate the meteorites.
The solar system painting is the drawing of vast sky where there were stars, milky ways, fireballs, shooting stars and all the things in the universe. Man is one small component of this immense system.
