The Reading Room เสนอ "No Party, No Phagnan" ทอล์คและ presentation  โดย วิริยะ สว่างโชติ โดยเป็นการพูดคุยเรื่องความเป็นมาและอิทธิพลชองดนตรี Psytrance ในงาน Full Moon Party โดยเฉพาะที่เกาะพงัน ในวันอาทิตย์ที่ 14 สิงหาคม ตั้งแต่เวลา 18:00น. เป็นต้นไป

การพูดคุยครั้งนี้จะเน้นไปที่เรื่อง Full Moon party และปาร์ตี้อื่นๆที่มี theme เกี่ยวกับพระจันทร์ที่จัดในเกาะพงัน ที่ผู้ร่วมงานส่วนใหญ่เป็นวัยรุ่นชาวต่างชาติ โดยจะให้ความสำคัญไปที่ความแตกต่างในการรับรู้และเข้าถึงประสบการณ์ปาร์ตี้เหล่านี้ ระหว่างนักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติและคนไทย นอกจากนี้ ยังมีเรื่องประเด็น Orientalism ที่นำมาใช้โปรโมตโดยการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทยมาตั้งแต่ยุค 1980s ที่พยายามดึงนักท่องเที่ยวต่างขาติให้เข้ามาเที่ยวที่เกาะพงันผ่านปาร์ตี้และดนตรีแดนซ์ ซึ่งส่งผลให้ช่วงกลางยุค 1990s เป็นต้นมา เกาะพงันกลายเป็นจุดมุ่งหมายของนักท่องเที่ยววัยรุ่นต่างชาติแทนที่เกาะกัว ในอินเดีย การทอล์คครั้งนี้จะพูดถึง บทบาทที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปของเกาะพงันและวิวัฒนาการของดนตรีและวัฒนธรรมแดนซ์ ในช่วงเวลาดังกล่าวมาจนถึงปัจจุบันด้วย

ประวัติย่อ
วิริยะ สว่างโชติ เป็นอาจารย์ที่ Cultural Studies Program, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล และเป็นผู้ก่อตั้ง วัฒนศาลา (Wathanasala Centre for Cultural Studies, WCCS) และเป็นสมาชิกหลักของ Inter-Asia Popular Music Studies (IAPMS) ในยุค 1990s วิริยะเป็นบรรณาธิการของนิตยสารดนตรี บันเทิงคดี และมิวสิค เอ๊กซเพรส

No Party, No Phangan

The Reading Room presents a talk and presentation by Viriya Sawangchot on Psytrance music and Full Moon Party particularly the ones in Koh Phangan on the evening of Sunday, August 14th, which coincidentally is a full moon day. 

This talk focuses on the Full Moon party and other varieties of ‘moon-themed’ parties held on various places on Koh Phangan in which participants within young western traveler, mass tourist and local people differentially perceive and encounter each other. The talk also raises question about the clichéd discourse of Orientalism as promote by Thai tourist authority emerged in the late of 1980s which led to the introduction of young western traveler and dance music into Koh Phangan. Then from the mid of 1990s, Koh Phangan served as a new destination of young western travelers who left Goa in India. However, its image has been changed along with its dance music culture, which this talk intends to track down and discuss in detail.

The talk will be conducted in Thai and English.

Bio:
Viriya Sawangchot is lecturer in Cultural Studies Program at Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University, Salaya Campus. He is a co-founder of Wathanasala Centre for Cultural Studies (WCCS) and a core member of Inter-Asia Popular Music Studies(IAPMS). In the mid of 1990s, he was an editor of two Thai popular music magazines, Banteongkadee and Music Express, respectively.
