ในโอกาสที่ Zhang Peili ได้ร่วมเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินจำนวนทั้งหมด 5 ท่านที่ร่วมแสดงผลงานในงานนิทรรศการ Survival Techniques: narratives of resistance ซึ่งกำลังจัดอยู่ ณ หอศิลปวิทยนิทรรศน์ สถาบันวิทยบริการ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย จนถึงวันที่ 26 มีนาคม โดยมี Davide Quadrio นักจีนวิทยา ภัณฑารักษ์ และนักประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะเป็นผู้คัดสรรผลงาน หอศิลปวิทยนิทรรศน์และหอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน ได้ร่วมมือกันจัดการบรรยายพิเศษครั้งนี้เพื่อให้ความรู้แก่ผู้สนใจเกี่ยวกับจุดกำเนิดของวิดีโออาร์ตในประเทศจีนและบอกเล่าประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวของศิลปินในช่วง 30 ปีที่ผ่านมา
 

เกี่ยวกับ Zhang Peili
Zhang Peili เป็นหนึ่งในจิตรกรหัวก้าวหน้าแห่งยุค 80 ของประเทศจีน และได้รับการขนานนามว่าเป็น “บิดาแห่งวิดีโออาร์ตของประเทศจีน” ในปี 1988 เขานำเสนอผลงานวิดีโอที่ใช้ชื่อว่า “30x30” ซึ่งแสดงภาพศิลปินทุกกระจกเงาแตกและประกอบเศษกระจกกลับคืนเดิมและทำซ้ำอยู่อย่างนี้เป็นเวลาสามชั่วโมง แม้นักวิจารณ์งานศิลปะหลายท่านในอดีตจะไม่มองว่าผลงานชิ้นนี้จัดเป็นวิดีโออาร์ตในความหมายที่เข้มงวด แต่ศิลปินกล่าวว่าตนต้องการสร้างผลงานที่ดูน่าเบื่อมาก ๆ เขาสร้างภาพที่ปราศจากคุณค่าในการรับชมเพื่อทดสอบปฏิกิริยาของผู้ดู
 

ในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้ Zhang Peili นำเสนอผลงานที่สร้างในปี 2006 ชื่อว่า Happiness ประกอบไปด้วยคลิปสั้น ๆ จากภาพยนตร์ดังเกี่ยวกับยุคปฏิวัติวัฒนธรรมของจีน ด้านหนึ่งของจอภาพเป็นภาพผู้ชายคนหนึ่งที่กำลังพูดยกย่องความยิ่งใหญ่ทางการเมืองและสังคมของประเทศจีนด้วยถ้อยคำสวยหรู กระชับ เฉียบคม อีกด้านหนึ่งเป็นภาพกลุ่มคนที่ต่างปรบมือชื่นชมถ้อยคำเหล่านั้น ในการเชื่อมต่อแบบง่าย ๆ ของภาพที่ซ้ำไปมา และต่อเนื่องกันไปเรื่อยจนดูไร้ชีวิตชีวาในผลงานชิ้นนี้ เราสามารถมองเห็นถึงประสิทธิภาพของลัทธิประชานิยมและวิถีชีวิตของคนในยุคนั้น

นิทรรศการนี้มี Davide Quadrio นักจีนวิทยา ภัณฑารักษ์ และนักประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะเป็นผู้คัดสรรผลงาน โดยมีผลงานจากศิลปินทั้งหมด 5 ท่าน ได้แก่ Zhang Peili, Shen Shaomin, Yang Zhenzhong, Rainer Ganahl และ Artur Zmijewski
 
นิทรรศการว่าด้วยการเอาตัวรอดและความอยู่รอดของปัจเจกชน กลุ่มคน ชนชาติ และชาติ ผลงานแต่ละชิ้นสะท้อนปัญหาอันเกิดขึ้นจากความขัดแย้งทางอุดมการณ์และความล้มเหลวในการสร้างบทสนทนาระหว่างกัน ภัณฑารักษ์กล่าวเกี่ยวกับผลงานว่า “เมื่อผมได้รับเชิญให้เป็นภัณฑารักษ์คัดสรรผลงานในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้ ผมนึกถึงกรุงเทพในช่วงที่ผ่านมาและต้องการนำเสนอความสัมพันธ์ส่วนตัวต่อประเทศไทยที่ผมได้รู้จัก เมื่อมองดูประเทศไทยช่วงสองปีมานี้ ทั้งเรื่องความไม่สงบและความไม่แน่นอนทางการเมืองและสังคมต่าง ๆ ผมรู้สึกว่างานที่คัดเลือกมาในครั้งนี้มีความสำคัญและเป็นสากลมาก นิทรรศการนี้เป็นสิ่งยืนยันถึงความรู้สึกกระวนกระวายใจที่ผมเองรู้สึก และเชื่อว่าหลาย ๆ คนก็คงรู้สึกด้วยเช่นเดียวกันในยามที่เราพูดถึงลัทธิชาตินิยม กลุ่มชนที่หลากหลาย และอำนาจ”
 
เกี่ยวกับภัณฑารักษ์ Davide Quadrio (หรืออีกชื่อ Dadou)
Davide Quadrio เป็นนักจีนวิทยา ภัณฑารักษ์ และนักประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ เขาก่อตั้ง BizArt ศูนย์ศิลปะไม่หวังผลกำไรแห่งแรกของเซียงไฮ้ในปี 1998 จากประสบการณ์การทำงานเป็นระยะเวลากว่าสิบปีทางด้านการข้ามวัฒนธรรม (Davide ได้รับรางวัล Young Leader for Culture in Asia จาก International Institute for Asian Studies และ Asia-Europe Foundation ที่กรุงเฮก ประเทศเนเธอร์แลนด์ ในปี 2004) Davide ได้ร่วมมือกับ Defne Ayas ในการก่อตั้ง Arthub Asia ในปี 2007 ซึ่งเป็นการรวมตัวทางด้านศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมของนักคิดอิสระที่อุทิศตัวให้กับการสร้างศิลปะร่วมสมัยในประเทศจีนและทวีปเอเชีย (www.arthubasia.org) ตั้งแต่ปี 2009 Davide เป็นผู้อำนวยการก่อตั้ง FarEastFarWest บริษัทผลิตศิลปะที่ให้การสนับสนุนโครงการทางวัฒนธรรมใหม่ ๆ ที่มีความท้าทายในทวีปเอเชีย ผลงานสะสมของ FarEastFarWest เปิดให้นักวิจัย ผู้ทำงานด้านศิลปะ และประชาชนทั่วไปเข้าชมได้ที่ Museum of Contemporary Photography ที่ชิคาโกได้ตั้งแต่เดือนพฤษภาคม ปี 2011 ขณะนี้ Davide พำนักอยู่ในประเทศไทยเพื่อทำงานวิจัยด้านพัฒนาการศิลปะและวัฒนธรรม โดยได้รับการสนับสนุนจากสภาวิจัยแห่งชาติ ตั้งแต่เดือนกันยายนปี 2010 เป็นต้นมา เขาเป็นอาจารย์สอนอยู่ที่มหาวิทยาลัยฟูตัน Institute of Visual Arts เซียงไฮ้

With regard to Zhang Peili’s participation in the exhibition ‘Survival Techniques: narratives of resistance’, curated by Davide Quadrio, sinologist, curator and historian, currently on display at The Art Center, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University, until March 26, The Art Center and Jim Thompson Art Center have come together to host a special talk that discusses to emergence of video art in China and the artistic journey of Zhang Peili for the past 30 years.

About Zhang Peili
Zhang Peili is one of the most innovative painters of the 80's in China and is regarded as ‘Father of Chinese Video Art’. In 1988, he presented a lengthy video piece entitled ‘30x30’, in which the artist is shown breaking a mirror and sticking the pieces together and repeating the motion for three hours. Even though many critics in the past did not view this work as ‘video art’ in a strict sense, Zhang Peili said he wanted to create a very dull video piece. He used images devoid of value to test the audience’s reaction.
 
In this exhibition, Zhang Peili showcases his 2006 piece entitled ‘Happiness’, consisting of short clips from celebrated films of the Cultural Revolution period. On one side of the screen, a man is speaking about political and social greatness of China in chopped rhetorical sentences. On the other side, a group of people applaud enthusiastically. In this simple link, repeated and somehow mechanically connected, we can see the universal efficiency and drama of political populism.
 
Zhang Peili was born in 1957. He lives and works in Hangzhou.
 
About Survival Techniques: narratives of resistance
Curated by Davide Quadrio, sinologist, curator, art historian, the exhibition consists of video works by five artists, namely Zhang Peili, Shen Shaomin, Yang Zhenzhong, Rainer Ganahl and Artur Zmijewski.

The show addresses ways of surviving and survival of individuals, groups of people, races and nations. Each work reflects problems arising from conflicts in ideologies and failure in having dialogues. The curator says, “When I have been asked to put together this show, I thought of my last years in Thailand and Bangkok and I wanted to express through this curatorial adventure my own connection with the Thailand I discovered. When I think back of the last two years in Bangkok, with all the unrest and social and political uncertainty, the works chosen for this show seem to me very significant and universal. It is quite a testimony to the uneasiness that I feel – and I am sure many other people do – when thinking about nationalism, ethnicity and power.”
 
About Davide Quadrio aka Dadou
Davide Quadrio is a sinologist, curator and art historian. He founded BizArt, Shanghai's first non-profit art centre, in 1998. Stemming from this experience and a decade working in cross cultural matters (Davide was awarded 2004 the title of young leader for culture in Asia by IIAS and ASEF in Den Hague, The Netherlands) in 2007, Quadrio together with Defne Ayas started Arthub Asia, a cultural and artistic constellation of independent thinkers devoted to contemporary art creation in China and across Asia. (www.arthubasia.org). Since 2009, Davide has been founding director of FarEastFarWest, an art production company that supports new and challenging cultural projects based in Asia. FarEastFarWest collection will be available to researchers, practitioners and general public from May 2011 at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. Davide is currently residing in Thailand conducting research with the support of the National Research Council of Thailand on cultural and artistic development. From September 2010 he is lecturing at Fudan University, Institute of Visual Arts, Shanghai.
