The Reading Room and Filmvirus present 'Death of the Authors!', a screening program inspired by intimate liaison between literature and film. 'A Page of Madness' and 'Orlando' are film adaptation from famous novels by Yasunari Kawabata and Virginia Woolf; while 'The Chinese Botanist's Daughters' and 'Successive Slidings of Pleasure' sees the authors, Sijie Dai and Alain Robbe-Grillet directed films based on their own texts.

 

The Reading Room ร่วมกับ Filmvirus เสนอโปรแกรมภาพยนตร์ ‘ประพันธกรต้องตาย!’ โดยเป็นการกล่าวถึงความสัมพันธ์อันลึกซึ้งระหว่างภาพยนตร์กับวรรณกรรมด้วยรักและชัง การสู้รบปรบมือ ปรับแปลงพันธุกรรมระหว่างภาพเคลื่อนไหวและตัวหนังสือ ทั้งที่ผู้ประพันธ์ลงมากำกับเองหรือถูกผู้อื่นนำไปตีความใหม่แบบไม่เหลือเค้าแน่นอนว่าประพันธกรต้องตายก่อน แต่ผู้อ่านและผู้ชมจะตายช้ากว่าหรือไม่มีแต่ตัวบทแบบไหนที่จะดำรงคงอยู่ท่ามกลางสมรภูมิที่ไม่มีใครยอมใครนี้

หนังเงียบระดับตำนานที่ได้ชื่อว่าเป็น The Man With a Movie Camera หรือ The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari ของวงการหนังญี่ปุ่น ผลงานการกำกับของ Teinosuke Kinugasa จากบทภาพยนตร์ดั้งเดิมของ Yasunari Kawabata นักเขียนรางวัลโนเบลปี 1968 เล่าเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับชายชาวประมง ที่พยายามสมัครเข้าทำงานเป็นภารโรงประจำโรงพยาบาลประสาทแห่งหนึ่ง เพียงเพื่อลักลอบนำตัวภรรยาของเขาซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในคนไข้ออกมา ผู้กำกับ Teinosuke Kinugasa นำเสนอเรื่องราวด้วยเทคนิคการถ่ายภาพขาวดำอันหนักแน่นหวือหวาผนวกกับการตัดสลับเหตุการณ์ไปมาด้วยลีลาใกล้เคียงงาน Expressionist ของเยอรมนี สร้างภาพหลอนของผู้มีอาการป่วยทางจิตออกมาได้อย่าน่าตื่นตะลึง จนตัวหนังถึงกับเคยถูกนำไปใช้เป็นกรณีศึกษาของบรรดาจิตแพทย์และนักจิตวิทยากันมาแล้ว! หนังเรื่องนี้เคยหายสาบสูญไปเกือบ 50 ปีก่อนที่ผู้กำกับจะค้นพบฟิล์มหนังอีกครั้งในปี 1971

 

A Page of Madness - Kurutta Ippeiji is a silent film by Japanese film director Kinugasa Teinosuke, made in 1926. It was lost for fifty years until being rediscovered in a shed in 1971. The film is the product of an avant garde group of artists in Japan known as the shinkankaku-ha (or School of New Perceptions) who tried to overcome naturalistic representation. Based on a treatment by the later 1968 Nobel Prize winning novelist Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972), writer of such classics of modern Japanese literature as The Izu Dancer and Snow Country, Kinugasa's self-financed landmark production seems a far cry from the bog-standard theatrically derived Kabuki adaptations and jidai-geki period swashbucklers being produced at the time en masse. The story of a retired sailor who has taken a job as a janitor in a lunatic asylum to look after his insane wife, locked away after attempting to drown their child, a synopsis of the plot can't begin to explain the power of the film, nor the audacity of its vision.

A visually stunning screen adaptation of Virginia Woolf's 1928 novel. Writer and director Sally Potter has fashioned a cinematic masterpiece mixing a treasure house of dreamy images from different times and places, an imaginative meditation upon the genders, and a clever glimpse of English literary and social history. As the titular poet with the inexplicable ability to live 400 years, from the 1600s to modern times, (first as a man, then a woman), Swinton capitalizes on an androgynous appearance. Potter boldly rejects the prospects of trying to make Swinton seem conventionally masculine, letting the performance transcend gender categories to become a keen meditation on identity.

The Chinese Botanist’s Daughters (Sijie Dai, China, 2006, 105mn)

A forbidden love in 80s China. Li Ming leaves the orphanage, and in order to continue studying, reaches a botanical centre managed by a shy and authoritarian professor who lives with his daughter An. Unlike her father, An is an outgoing girl and welcomes Ming with enthusiasm and joy. Before long the complicity between the girls becomes a heart wrenching and dangerous attraction. "The Chinese Botanist's Daughters" is a follow-up of French-Chinese director Sijie Dai's Golden Globe-nominated "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" made in 2002.

A seductive girl, a murder of her room-mate, a detective, clergy and lawyer seduced and intrigued by the possible murderess who keeps getting naked and who may have supernatural powers. The victim is painted on with colors, wine, liquids, blood; She becomes a canvas, a victim, a mannequin, bodies are used for painting, nudity, poses, victims, artistic bondage with blood. This is Robbe-Grillet deconstructing the death of a woman on screen with some surreal touches and spiced with lesbian erotica. Experimental and intellectual writer and film-maker who is part of the 'nouveau roman' (new or anti-novel) trend, Alain Robbe-Grillet discards narratives and instead likes to delve into the metaphysics of a story and its details, descriptions and structure, letting ideas and stories develop indirectly through such explorations. The focus of his movies is on the structure and cogs of the mystery rather than the story itself. The resulting films are avant-garde, extremely non-linear and often impenetrable.
