ศิลปินเสวนา “การตีความขุนช้างขุนแผน (ใหม่) ในมุมมองฝรั่ง”

 หอศิลป์ บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน ร่วมกับศิลปินชาวอเมริกัน บรูซ แกนเดอร์สัน ที่มีผลงานภาพถ่ายดิจิตอลซึ่งจัดแสดงอยู่ในนิทรรศการ “มุมมองใหม่ขุนช้างขุนแผน” จะนำเสนอศิลปินเสวนา “การตีความขุนช้างขุนแผน (ใหม่) ในมุมมองฝรั่ง”  ในวันเสาร์ที่ 25 มิถุนายน 2554 เวลา14.00-15.00น. ณ หอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน (ดำเนินรายการเป็นภาษาอังกฤษและมีการแปลสรุปเป็นภาษาไทย)
 ในฐานะที่บรูซ แกนเดอร์สันเป็นคนต่างชาติ จึงทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้สังเกตการณ์วัฒนธรรมไทยจากเพียงภายนอก การเฝ้าสังเกตการณ์ทางวัฒนธรรมด้วยความเคารพทำให้เขามีส่วนในการตอบโต้ทางวัฒนธรรมผ่านการตีความตามที่เห็น ทั้งตำนาน เรื่องเล่า และวรรณกรรม เหล่านี้ล้วนเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมไทยที่รุ่มรวย วรรณกรรมชาวบ้านชุดขุนช้าง ขุนแผน ในภาคภาษาอังกฤษจากการแปลของดร.ผาสุก พงษ์ไพจิตร และดร.คริส เบเกอร์ (The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen Siam’s Folk Epic of love, War and Tragedy) มีการให้รายละเอียดและใช้ภาษาที่เจิดจรัสในการแปล ทำให้บรูซสามารถสร้างภาพสะท้อนของเนื้อเรื่องที่มีลักษณะเป็นสากลได้
 สำหรับการนำเสนอที่หอศิลป์ บ้านจิม ทอมป์สันในครั้งนี้ บรูซ แกนเดอร์สัน จะเริ่มต้นจากประเด็นความสนใจของเขาในเบื้องต้นที่มีต่อศิลปะตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ทั้งภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนัง วัด การแสดงรวมไปถึงผลงานวรรณกรรม  ความสนใจเหล่านี้ได้สร้างพัฒนาการของเขาอย่างไรในฐานะศิลปินสาขาทัศนศิลป์และสาขาการแสดง และสุดท้ายบรูซจะได้กล่าวถึงเป้าหมายและการปฏิบัติเพื่อให้เกิดผลในการแลกเปลี่ยนทางวัฒนธรรม ความร่วมมือระหว่างศิลปิน นักแปล และนักแสดงในประเทศไทย 
 เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน:
บรูซ กันเดอร์เซ็น (Bruce Gundersen) เป็นศิลปินที่ทำงานศิลปะหลายแขนง และทำงานเป็นทีมกับ คล้าก ผลงานของเขาถูกนำไปแสดงตามเทศกาลศิลปะและพิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะร่วมสมัยหลายแห่งในยุโรปและอเมริกา ผลงานวีดีโอ ที่เขาทำกับคล้าก ชื่อว่า ฟิชกัน ฟิล์ม เขาได้บันทึกการเต้นรำในพิธีต่างๆ ของอุษาอาคเนย์ เขามีความสนใจและทำวิจัยเกี่ยวกับเรื่องเล่าในตำนานต่างๆ ที่เป็นวัฒนธรรมสากล  ซึ่งได้กลายเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้เขาได้ทำงานภาพพิมพ์ดิจิตอล บรูซกล่าวว่า “ การหาแรงบันดาลใจในเรื่องระบบความเชื่อและ ศิลปะแบบท้องถิ่น จากยุคโบราณ และ ยุคสมัยใหม่ในอุษาคเนย์ ผมต้องการสร้างมันขึ้นมาอีกครั้งด้วยกระบวนสมัยใหม่ผ่านงานศิลปะแบบดิจิตัล” เขาได้รับทุนจากสมาคมวัฒนธรรมเอเซีย ในปี 2551 (2008) เพื่อที่จะเข้ามาทำงานวิจัยในเอเซีย ปัจจุบันเขาทำงานและอาศัยอยู่ที่ นิวยอร์ค สหรัฐฯ  สอบถามรายละเอียดและสำรองที่นั่งได้ที่หอศิลป์ บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน โทร.02 612 6741 แฟกซ์ 02 219 2911 อีเมล์ education@jimthompsonhouse.com

Interpretation of Khun Chang Khun Phaen in a Foreigner’s Perspectives

 The Jim Thompson Art Center in collaboration with American artist Bruce Gundersen, whose inkjet prints on silk and paper are featured in the exhibition “Re-Reading Khun Chang Khun Phaen,” cordially invites you to attend the Artist Forum: Interpretation of Khun Chang Khun Phaen in a Foreigner’s Perspectives on Saturday 25th June 2011 from 02:00-03:00 p.m. at The Jim Thompson Art Center (Program will be in English with Thai summarized translation)  
 As a foreigner, Bruce Gundersan is an outsider to Thailand's culture. However, as a respectful observer, he has become a cultural correspondent, visually interpreting the myths, legends and tales of Thailand's rich heritage. In The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen a Siamese folk epic of love, war and tragedy, translated by Dr. Pasuk Phongpaichit and Dr. Chris Baker, the reader is provided with detailed and vivid information about the lives of the main characters.  From this Bruce was able to conjure up images that have a universally resonating quality.

In his presentation at The Jim Thompson Art Center Bruce Gundersen will lecture about his initial interest in Southeast Asian art, including mural paintings, temples, performances and literary arts. He will describe how these influences have affected his    development and interests as a visual and performing artist. And last, he will talk about his goals and the execution of a cultural exchange by collaborating with artists, translators and performers in Thailand.
 About the artist:
Bruce Gundersen
Bruce Gundersen is an interdisciplinary artist. His collaborative performance art duo Gundersen/ Clark has been included in festivals and contemporary museums in Europe and the United States. His collaborative video work FISHGUN FILMS has documented dance and rituals of Southeast and South Asia. His interest in universal cultural legends and myths is an ongoing creative investigation, inspiring his most recent digital art prints. “Finding my inspiration in the belief systems and vernacular art from the ancient / modern cultures of Southeast Asia, I hope to regenerate them through the modernity of digital arts.”   In 2008, he received grants from Asian Cultural Council to work in Asia.  He currently lives and works in the U.S. in New York.
