Sutthirat Supaparinya: Disc is Dead, Disco is Alive!
Installation Art Exhibition
12 January –8 March 2011 Opening Reception: Wednesday 12 January 2011, 7pm WTF Gallery

Presents Chiang Mai based artist Som Sutthirat Supaparinya’s first major exhibition in Bangkok since 2004. Acclaimed for her video installations and inter-active arts, Sutthirat’s work reports on encounters and situations that she renders into artistic metaphors. The exhibition is politically inspired and underlines the adverse social impact derived from the rapid development of technology and media. Whether it is the lack of freedom of expression, the distorted content of news and media influenced by government during Thailand’s last political crisis, or the sore-eyed bombardment of advertising in the public arena, Sutthirat reflects her acute sensitivity to politics and contemporary society into a conceptual engagement, through installation art techniques.
Born in 1973, Sutthirat is a curator and visual artist working and living in Chiang Mai, Thailand.  She graduated with a Master Scholar of Media Arts from Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig, Germany. She is a guest lecturer in the “Thai and Southeast Asia Studies Program”, Payap University and Media and Communication Technology at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. Acclaimed for VDO and installation artist, her works have been shown in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Korea, Australia, and Italy. She has also participated in the 3rd Guangzhou Triennial in China. The exhibition comprises five installations all created during 2005-2011. Two of the works will premiere at WTF gallery, portraying the interplay between the medium and the message, the mutation of meanings thereof, mediated by context.

(“แผ่นดิสก์ตายเเล้ว เเต่ดิสโก้ยังอยู่!) โดย สุทธิรัตน์ ศุภปริญญา ศิลปินจากเชียงใหม่ โดยนิทรรศการครั้งนี้เป็นผลงานเดี่ยวชุดเเรกของสุทธิรัตน์ที่จัดเเสดงในกรุงเทพฯตั้งเเต่ปี 2547 สุทธิรัตน์เป็นที่รู้จักดีในนามของศิลปินที่ผลิตผลงานศิลปะจัดวาง วีดีโอ เเละงานที่เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้เข้าชมมีส่วนร่วม (interactive) โดยศิลปินนำประสบการณ์ตรงและสถานการณ์จริงในชีวิตของตนเองมาถ่ายทอดเป็นอุปลักษณ์ทางศิลปะ นิทรรศการครั้งนี้ไม่เพียงเเค่เป็นการเเสดงออกทางความคิดทางการเมืองของเธอ เเต่ยังชี้ให้เห็นถึงผลกระทบที่รุนเเรง ที่เกิดจากการพัฒนาอย่างรวดเร็วเกินไปของเครื่องมือสื่อสาร เทคโนโลยี เเละสังคมในยุคนี้ หัวข้อที่ถูกหยิบยกมาในผลงานครั้งนี้ รวมถึงการถูกริดรอนสิทธิเสรีภาพทางการเเสดงออก และการถูกปกปิดบิดเบือนข้อมูลความจริงผ่านสื่อในเหตุการณ์ความขัดเเย้งทางการเมืองที่เกิดขึ้นในกรุงเทพเมื่อเดือนพฤษภาคม 2553 หรือเรื่องการถาถมของสื่อโฆษณาที่มีอยู่ในบริเวณพื้นที่สาธารณะมากเกินไปจนทำลายสุนทรียภาพ ทั้งหมดนี้สุทธิรัตน์ได้พยายามเเสดงให้เห็นจุดยืนทางความคิดความรู้สึกที่ชัดเจนของเธอต่อระบบการเมืองเเละสังคมสมัยใหม่ ผ่านกระบวนทางความคิดเเละเทคนิคการสร้างงานศิลปะที่มีความลึกซึ้ง
สุทธิรัตน์เกิดในปี ค.ศ. 1573 ปัจจุบันเป็นศิลปินเเละภัณฑารักษ์อยู่ที่เชียงใหม่ จบการศึกษาระดับ Meisterschulerin ด้าน สื่อศิลปะจาก Hochschule Fuer Grafik und Buchkunst เมืองไลป์ซิก ประเทศเยอรมนี เธอเคยทำงานเป็นอาจารย์พิเศษสอนที่มหาวิทยาลัยพายับ เเละมหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฎเชียงใหม่ เธอสร้างผลงานทัศนศิลป์หลากหลายรูปแบบ โดยเฉพาะผลงานทางด้านสื่อศิลปะ (Media Art) และศิลปะจัดวาง (Installation) รวมทั้งผลิตวิดีโอสารคดีอย่างต่อเนื่องและได้แสดงออกสู่สาธารณะทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ ที่ประเทศเกาหลี อิตาลี ออสเตรเลีย เเละยังเข้าร่วมงานเเสดงศิลปะ Triennial ที่เมืองกวางเจา ประเทศจีนด้วย ในปี 2554 นี้ เธอได้รับทุนเพื่อไปวิจัยและสร้างผลงานชิ้นใหม่ที่นิวยอร์ก สหรัฐอเมริกาเป็นเวลาหกเดือน นิทรรศการครั้งนี้ประกอบไปด้วยงานศิลปะทั้งหมด 5 ชุด ซึ่งทำขึ้นในระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2548 – 2554 โดยผลงานสองในห้าชิ้นนี้จะเเสดงเป็นครั้งเเรกที่ WTF Gallery โดยเป็นการพูดถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสื่อและเนื้อหา และการที่ความหมายของเนื้อหานั้นๆอาจเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามสื่อที่ใช้และตามบริบทที่ต่างกัน นิทรรศการนี้ได้ไดัรับการสนับสนุนโดย Chic 39 Bed & Breakfast (www.chic39.com), Jim Thompson Art on Farm เเละ Canon ข้อมูลอื่นๆเกี่ยวกับนิทรรศการเปิดให้เข้าชม ทุกวันอังคาร - วันอาทิตย์ เวลา 15.00-22.00น.ไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่ายWTF Gallery & Cafe7 สุขุมวิท 51คลองตันเหนือ วัฒนากรุงเทพฯ 10110โทร/เเฟกซ์ 02 662 6246สถานีรถไฟฟ้า BTS ทองหล่อwww.wtfbangkok.com ติดต่อสมรัก ศิลา - ผู้จัดการโทร (66) 2 662 6246, (66) 89 926 5474Email: somrak@wtfbangkok.com
