In the Renaissance ther e was an interest in naturalism and expeditions that left Europe in se arch for new lands led to new discoveries of plant species. In the 17t h and 18th century, botanical art gained popularity in the west, espec ially England and Scotland where gardening became popular among aristo crats who began collecting and cataloguing exotic and native plants. S adly, this genre faded in modern times.\nThis exhibition features wate rcolour paintings by India's foremost botanical painters - Hemlata Pra dhan. A gifted child in the Pradhan family that runs orchid nursery fo r three generations in the hills of Kalimpong, Sikkim, Hemalta Pradhan graduated with a Master's Degree in Natural History Illustration from the Royal College of Art, London. It is rare in today's world to see such a talent in botanical illustrations: plants and orchids not only become alive in her paintings but also the paintings are scientific re cords of vanishing species. It is a treat for orchid lovers in Thailan d to see these traditional botanical illustrations. Pradhan’s works have been exhibited at the British Museum and are in the collection of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England. The Kingdom of Bhutan also commi ssioned her for their orchid stamps.\nSerindia Gallery is proud to pre sent an exhibition of Hemlata Pradhan’s work, which helps to enrich our knowledge of orchids and plants in Thailand.
