 e Is No Box with new oil paintings by the\nVietnamese artist Bui Thanh
  Tam.\nBui Thanh Tam in his paintings explores contemporary society fr
 om different angles. Vietnam is a\nconservative society as in most of 
 Southeast Asia, and changing rapidly. The women in his paintings\nofte
 n serve as symbols and may be viewed as having non-traditional Vietnam
 ese values. The artist\nquestions the role of women in Vietnam's socie
 ty, the development of its contemporary society and\nalso how the curr
 ent society can be seen as chaotic, especially for its youth.\nThe art
 ist says: “This series of paintings was created when Vietnam is in a
  transitional stage. The\nhalfhearted communist regime is on its path 
 to change and integrate into the wider world. This sudden\nchange with
 out orientation makes the human psyche overwhelmed, confused and disor
 iented. The\nresult is that society often develops conflicts between p
 arts of the Vietnamese culture that are Eastern\nand parts that have W
 estern influences”.\nBui Thanh Tam is 36 years old and one of Vietna
 m’s most important young and upcoming artists. He\ngraduated from th
 e Hanoi Institute of Fine Art in 2009 and has taken part in internatio
 nal exhibitions\nin Hong Kong, Netherlands, Malaysia, and China as wel
 l as in Vietnam. This is his first exhibition in\nThailand.\n\nFor mor
