 Sun Room’, Bangkok-based British artist Ralph Kiggell furthers his e
 xploration of tropical nature, which he began in 2000 in Thailand. \nT
 hrough vibrant woodblock prints, Kiggell presents images of flora and 
 fauna--some easily recognizable, some less so--as well as primitive or
 ganisms, all nurtured directly or indirectly by the sun. Kiggell looks
  at the common ancestry of organic nature, while retaining artistic li
 cense to depict what he pleases. Using his imagination as the magnifyi
 ng glass, taking up his knives and brushes as the tools of dissection 
 and analysis, and his woodblocks as the petri dishes, he transposes hi
 s findings onto the paper.\n\nThe natural materials Kiggell uses for h
 is prints are aptly ecological. The woodblock’s surface reveals its 
 growth as a once-living organism, while the paper is handmade from the
  bark of the paper-mulberry tree. The prints are hand-printed without 
 a press and the colours are all water-based.\n\nRalph Kiggell studied 
 woodblock printing in Kyoto and Tokyo and received a Japanese governme
 nt scholarship to complete a Masters in Printmaking at Tama Art Univer
 sity. He has lived in Thailand for 12 years, and has held residencies 
 at Bangkok University, Thailand, and Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts, C
 hina. In 2011, he has also exhibited in Beijing, Moscow and Edinburgh.
