wongchaiSujin Watanawongchai is a 41-year-old Thai artist, graduate of
Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, with a BA in Art Education and a
postgraduate of Fort Hays State University, USA, with a MFA in Fine Ar
t, spent 5 years in New York City to study for a Master Degree while h
olding art exhibitions there. He has been invited as an art instructor
in various universities such as Silpakorn University International Co
llege, Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, King Mongkut’s
University of Technology Thonburi and Assumption University. For \"Soun
d of Silence\" – his latest solo exhibition in Bangkok - Sujin offer
s 10 paintings of vivid colours, inspired by text of both languages, T
hai and English; which combine all kind of media that the audience can
experience in its everyday life, such as billboard, newspaper and TV.
Sujin has always been interested in all elements composing his environ
ment, ranging from small details of his routine life experiences to bi
g images or the impact of the sound that leave him to question himself
on different issues. One of his significant inspirations came from th
e monks chanting, something he witnesses on a daily basis that is also
one of his favourite activities. Surprisingly, the chanting of the mo
nks has been around for thousands of years but it still perfectly fits
into our contemporary society and era.“I was inspired by the Thai l
anguage and Bali Sanskrit’s sound that the Thai monks use when chant
ing”, said Sujin. The Bali Sanskrit chanting is the heart and soul o
f Buddhism. Instead of painting a picture of the Lord Buddha in a vari
ous different poses, I chose the most popular chants to stencil onto t
he canvas. The process of making art becomes then a meditation exercis
e as I work from one painting to another in pure sensation of calmness
and voidness.\n\nFor more information visit http://www.portfolios.net
