SUMMARY:นิทรรศการ \"Song Of The Rainbow\"
DESCRIPTION:Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is pleased to announce Indones
ian artist Arahmaiani’s (b.1961) solo exhibition in Malaysia. Song o
f the Rainbow is scheduled to run from 7 – 23 November 2019 at Richa
rd Koh Fine Art, 229, Jalan Maarof, Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar 59000, Ku
ala Lumpur. The artist will present 8 new acrylic paintings on canvas.
Arahmaiani is one of Indonesia’s most respected and iconic contempor
ary artists. And her work is internationally recognized for its powerf
ul and provocative commentaries on social and cultural issues. Regarde
d as one of the most prominent figures in the field of performance art
in Southeast Asia, Arahmaiani also works in a variety of mediums incl
uding video, drawing, sculpture, and installation. In Song of the Rain
bow, Arahmaiani unveils a suite of new paintings from her on-going Jaw
i script (known as Arab Gundul or Arab Pegon in Jawa) series that bega
n in 1993/94 with her seminal work Lingga-Yoni (1994), which contained
Arab, Malay, and Hindu scripts. This series represents Arahmaiani’s
most recent reiteration of the Jawi script series in canvas format.Ov
er the years, Arahmaiani had utilized and explored the syncretic under
pinnings of the series to discuss a broad range of social concerns, bu
t most importantly to highlight the Javanese archipelago’s historica
l tolerance and respect for diversity. The series displaces long-stand
ing Eurocentric belief of the region’s dogmatic inflexibility, and i
n fact, celebrates the region’s progressiveness in social diversity
without being located in a hierarchical structure like so in the curre
nt social-conservatist climate of the West.A distinct feature of the s
eries is its brightly coloured depiction of the Jawi script and one of
its main function is to portray a sense of ‘non-violence’ to coun
teract the increasingly harsh perception of Islam in the new global so
cio-political landscape – post 9/11. This new body of works are cons
idered a natural progression from Arahmaiani’s two seminal body of w
orks; I Love You – After Joseph Beuys Social Sculpture (2009) and Fl
ag Project (2006-2010), in which Jawi scripts are presented outside th
eir pre-conceived forms to disrupt bigoted narratives, and by extensio
n, encourage curiosity and dialogue with the public to create better u
nderstanding of Islamic practice and faith.\n\nFor more information vi
