2-7pm, with half time break Film informationOut 1, Noli me tangere (F
rance, 1971)Director: Jacques RivetteRuntime: 760 (unevenly laid acros
s eight episodes)Language: French with English subtitleCast: Jean-Pier
re Léaud, Michael Lonsdale, Michèle Moretti, Hermine Karagheuz, Bern
adette Lafont, Juliet Berto, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, Barbet Schroeder
and Éric Rohmer Synopsis: Jacques Rivette's near-mythic 13-hour ser
ial, divided into eight episodes around 90–100 minutes each, the fil
m is distinctly and explicitly indebted to HonorĂ© de Balzac's La ComĂ
©die humaine, particularly the History of the Thirteen collection (183
3–1835). The vast length of the film allows Rivette, like Balzac, to
construct multiple loosely connected characters with independent stor
ies whose subplots weave amongst each other and continually uncover ne
w characters with their own subplots. \"Out 1\" is a very precise pic
ture of post May '68 malaise - when Utopian dreams of a new society ha
d crashed and burned, radical terrorism was starting to emerge in unli
kely places and a great many other things. Two marginals who don't kno
w one another stumble into the remnants of a \"secret society\": Thoma
s, a seemingly deaf-mute who all of a sudden begins to talk and Freder
ique, a con artist working the \"short con\" (stealing drinks and tric
king men who think she's a hooker out of their money). Meanwhile there
are two theater groups rehearsing classic Greek dramas: \"Seven Again
st Thebes\" and \"Prometheus Bound\". A member of the Moretti group pa
sses a note to Leaud about \"The 13\" which sends Leaud on a search fo
r \"The 13\". His search brings him eventually to Bulle Ogier's shop i
n Les Halles \"L'Angle du Hasard.\" Berto follows much the same path w
hen she steals a cachet of letters from Jacques Doniol-Valcroze and tr
ies to get money from their owners for their return. These twin activi
ties reactivate \"The 13\" which had been dormant for years, revealing
among other things that the two theater groups were once one.\n\n\nFo
