 February – 21 March, 2015\nVenue: Thavibu Gallery\nVernissage: Satur
 day 21 February 2015 at 5 pm\nCurator: Rathsaran Sireekan\nOpen: Monda
 y – Saturday: 11:00 – 19:00\nThavibu Gallery is pleased to present
the art exhibition Representing Localities: Memory and Experience —
\nshowcasing recent paintings and sculptures by Therdkiat Wangwatchaku
l and Rattana Salee.\nIn a new series of work, the rising-star sculpto
r Rattana Salee continues her dialogue with the city she lives in,\nth
ough shifting the focus from Bangkok’s aggressive expansion via clau
strophobic concrete blocks to thought-provoking representation of loca
l architectures and domestic objects which hold personal memories. The
\npainter Therdkiat Wangwatcharakul sets out in this series as a flane
ur walking the streets of Bangkok only to\nfind stray dogs, old vehicl
es and pedestrians —the experience not available to him when traveli
ng with his car.\nKey to these two artists’ rendition of their impre
ssions and memories is the highly mediated representation of\ntheir ex
 perience—reminiscent of Bertolt Brecht’s ‘distancing effect’ (
Verfremdungseffekt)—unique to them as\npractitioners of their media.
\nRattana Salee (b. 1982), a holder of a MFA in Sculpture at Silpakorn
University (2011), marked her debut\nsolo exhibition with Shell(Shock
ed)—the atmospheric sculptural installation comprising metal and pla
ster\narchitectural structures which reflect the private and communal
complexities of urban living—at Thavibu\nGallery in 2010. Among othe
r grants and awards, she was a recipient of the French Embassy’s sch
olarship to\nstudy at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENS
BA), Paris, France, in 2011.\nTherdkiat Wangwatcharakul (b. 1971) grad
uated with a Master in Painting from Silapakorn University in\n2003. H
e often paints with oil on aluminium sheets and also with oil on canva
 s. The use of aluminium makes his\nplay with light and shadow unique.
Typical to Therdkiat’s spatially sensitive compositions are his mini
mal uban-scapes. In Bangkok Station at Thavibu Gallery in 2010, Therdk
iat refrains from earlier architecturally aligned\nworks to spotlight
the daily rituals of the capital’s inhabitants. Therdkiat has partic
ipated in several exhibitions in\nThailand, as well as in Singapore (2
001), Japan (2003), the Netherlands, Korea, Spain, and USA (2006). He
was\nawarded the Jurors' Choice Prize in the ASEAN Art Awards in 2000.
