Surprisingly, they were not t aken in Pattaya or soi Nana but in 1980 Singapore, on once legendary B ugis Street. Soon after these photos were taken, they became historica l relics as the street was razed and ‘redeveloped’ into a sanitize d shopping and nightlife district, thereby obliterating this exotic sa ilors’ sex paradise from the memory of Singapore.\nWide-eyed, newly arrived in Asia, the then 23 year old photographer from Paris felt on Bugis Street like a child lost in a cloud of vivid butterflies. He bef riended them and took their pictures. They posed—like Hollywood star s; they manifested their hopeless fantasies of being adored and admire d. Like him, like all of us, they were human, of flesh, blood and desi re; not just curiosity objects of sexual commerce from exotic Southeas t Asia, the stereotype imposed upon them by the world.\nKathmandu Phot o Gallery is proud to present ‘Bugis Street’, a nostalgic flashbac k by French photographer Alain Soldeville. Working as a photojournalis t since 1985, his work has been widely published in leading publicatio ns such as New York Times, Stern, Newsweek, National Geographic and Ge o.
