SUMMARY:นิทรรศการ \"hide\"
DESCRIPTION:hide - A Photo Series by Jason Vaughn \r\nOct 12 - Oct 31
 , 2018\r\n--\r\nAbout hide\r\n\r\nhide is a project that began as a co
mmentary on Wisconsin’s hunting tradition, using deer stands as a me
taphor for the changing values of the sport. When my sudden cancer dia
gnosis interrupted the project, hide took on a much deeper, more perso
nal meaning.\r\nI was inspired on my drives through Wisconsin by deer
stands, and began having conversations with hunters about the traditio
n of hunting in their families. Some people described building the sta
nds as something permanent that could be passed to the next generation
, especially sons who would inherit the land. I was anticipating the b
irth of my own son and thinking about my legacy to him, so this idea r
esonated strongly with me. I also heard hunters emphasize that their p
astime is not about violence, but more about oneness with nature and t
ime spent with their children in the stands. I wanted these photograph
s to capture the serenity of that sentiment, and to suggest the dignit
y that was associated with hunting when it was seen as a means of feed
ing large families. Finally, I wanted to look at the issue from a hist
orical standpoint, and the impermanent nature of some of the stands il
lustrates the fading hunting tradition in Wisconsin, which has decline
d in recent years.\r\nWhen I was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011, my w
ork on hide was put on hold. I was 32 years old and had a 3-month-old
baby at home. Having to face mortality so unexpectedly made me come ba
ck to the project with a new perspective on the ideas of permanence an
d impermanence. Ultimately, hide became my reflection on legacies and
family, my homage to the state that has become my home, and a narrativ
 e about accepting change.\r\n--\r\nArtist Bio\r\n\r\nJason Vaughn is a
fine art documentary photographer based in Wisconsin. His first major
series, hide, presented a typological study using Wisconsin hunting s
tands as a reflection on legacies and family. In 2011, while working o
n hide, he was diagnosed with leukemia at age 32. After a yearlong hia
tus, chemotherapy, and recovery, he completed the series in 2014. Phot
ographs from hide were included in the State of the Art exhibition at
the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. For this show, curators vi
sited over 1,000 studios in a search for \"the most compelling America
n art being created today.\" \r\nIn the wake of hide’s success, Vau
ghn has been called “one of the more exciting photographers…coming
out of the American Midwest” by PhotoEye and was invited to China a
s a guest artist for the International Yixian Festival. \r\nHe is cur
rently preparing for a solo gallery show in October 2018 at the Nevven
Gallery in Sweden, as well as for the release of his second book, Dri
ftless, through TBW Books, at the New York Art Book Fair and Paris Pho
to.\r\nHis work is included in collections such as Snite Museum (Unive
rsity of Notre Dame), Crystal Bridges Museum, and Amon Carter Museum o
f American Art. He has been featured in the New York Times, Slate Maga
zine, and Artforum, among others.\n\nFor more information visit http:/
