a solo movement-based performance by
Ka-ge Teerawat Mulvilai

"SATAPANA" (Establishment)
-- What is born shall cease --

Chapter 1 : Red Tank
-- Whence did you get the tank?

"SATAPANA" is the third solo performance by Teerawat Mulvilai, after "Medusa" (2001) and Goda Gardener (2005).

SATAPANA was conceived after Teerawat received grants from two international organizations, Art Network Asia (ANA) and Asian Public Intellectual (API), to travel within Asia to research the topic of Censorship and Performing Arts. Teerawat has interviewed artists in Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Japan, and Indonesia to explore the issue of limited freedom of expression by the state and society, as well as self-censorship.

His work has taken him back to his own childhood. He realized that his growth into the world of art indeed came from the need for a solution to domestic violence, restriction, and family tension. As time passes, many of his works end up addressing violence within social structure, injustice, and man-to-man violence.

The establishment of fear in order to control is an invisible yet effective power. Under it, people choose to limit their own freedom and surrender themselves.

Today we see much "forbidding" in the Thai society. In the past, the state used both laws and guns to deal with people with a different idea from the state; Accusing them of being communists, the "kicking down the mountain and burning the red tanks" method, arrests and imprisonment, and disappearances are what has been happening in several occasions in the past 40 years.

We see the images of the past overlapping the present. White fog. Red tanks. Blue flames. Are we going to step over it all like we used to? Are we going to walk forward, or surrender and walk back the same way?
