 hael Croft, a long-term resident of Thailand who is currently based in
  Bangsaen. Croft’s paintings radically reinvent the art historical l
 anguage of self-portraiture through a labor-intensive engagement with 
 ideas of memory. The title ASKANCE points to a mirror metaphor in term
 s of recognition and distortion, presence and absence and proximity an
 d distance. The complex surfaces of Croft’s paintings function as a 
 meditation on questions of the relationship between adult and early ex
